Welcome to our site
The commune of Kani-Kéli includes six villages in the south of Mayotte: M’Bouini, Passi-Kéli, M’Ronabéja, Kani
Bé, Choungui and the capital of Kani-Kéli. The village of Choungui has a somewhat special position compared to
the rest of the commune, because it is located inland, at the foot of Mount Choungui.
This summit offers an impressive panoramic view of the very jagged coast and the lagoon. The particularly
beautiful white sand beach of N’gouja, bordered by a forest of enormous baobabs and endowed with an extremely
rich fauna, makes it one of the most important tourist sites of the island of Mayotte.
Choungui is a village in the commune of Kani-Kéli in Mayotte. It is located in south-western Mayotte, to the
north of Mronabeja and to the east of Kanibe. As of 2007 the community had a total population of 772 people. A
football ground is located in the southern part of the village. One of the highest parts of the island, Mont
Choungui, is nearby. Mount Choungui is the second highest peak in Mayotte after Mount Bénara (660 m).
It is made up of the remains of one of the great volcanoes of Mayotte, more precisely a basaltic cone formed
by a phonolitic extrusion, less sensitive to erosion than other volcanic rocks. The ascent of Mount Choungui
is a popular activity for tourists in Mayotte, even if the path that climbs there, drawn as a training course
for the foreign legion, has many climbing passages, with a slope of more than 70 °.
Offering a breathtaking view of the whole island, its lagoon and the Indian Ocean, it is one of the most
visited mountains in Mayotte and one of the symbols of the island; it also appears on the coat of arms of the
commune of Kani-Kéli.
The village of Kani-Kéli is located at the bottom of one of the four large bays of the "crest" of Mayotte, to
the south. The town also occupies a large part of this ridge.
Kani-Kéli is one of the villages whose inhabitants are from Madagascar. Malagasy is therefore spoken in the
villages of Kani-Kéli, Passi-Kéli, M'ronabéja and M'bouini while shimaoré is used in the villages of Choungui
and Kani Bé.
Kani-Kéli's activity is mainly oriented towards fishing. There is also one of the rare fishermen's
cooperatives in Mayotte.
Kani-Kéli is also home to one of the most famous beaches in Mayotte, Ngouja, where one is almost guaranteed to
see several species of sea turtles which particularly appreciate the underwater meadow that leads to the drop
off. This turtle colony is one of the largest in the region, and scientists suggest that the presence of a
hotel would have a beneficial effect, with hotel security preventing the fierce poaching that plagues almost
everywhere else on the island. In addition to a restaurant, a small nautical base, which allows tourists to
explore the turtles and the drop off, has also been installed in Ngouja.
