Koungou is a French commune located in the department and overseas region of Mayotte which was home to 32,156
inhabitants in 2017. It is the second most populous municipality in Mayotte. The commune of Koungou, located
in the northeast of the island, borders the Mamoudzou capital. Koungou is one of the ancient localities of
Mayotte. Its population dates back to the Middle Ages. The current town of Koungou is the most recent site.
Koungou is made up (from north to south) of six villages (districts): Longoni, Kangani, Trévani, Koungou,
Majicavo Koropa (formerly Majivaco II) and Majicavo Lamir (formerly Majicavo I).
The village of Longoni was created by populations coming from the North of Mayotte in particular Mtsahara. It is home to the only merchant port in Mayotte, which gives it a major role in the economic activity of the island. The port is managed by the company Mayotte Channel Gateway as part of a public service delegation from the departmental council
Trévani notably includes a vast hotel and seaside complex.
The town hall is located there. There is the Frédéric d'Achery college (named in honor of a former mayor of the town) and five primary schools. This village also houses: a post office; a soccer field ; a multi-purpose platform and an associative center; the municipal library; the municipal police station; an ETPC career.
Majicavo Lamir takes its name from the Ali Amir family who lived there and founded it. Owner since its
foundation, the small village has seen the arrival of several families from elsewhere and continues to grow.
It has developed in particular since the construction of the housing estate (Trois Vallées and Haut Vallons),
the shopping center and the penitentiary center, as well as a large college.
The village is now divided into two:
the old village, the Majicavo Lamir before;
the housing estates (Trois-Vallées and Hauts Vallons), which today houses the largest shopping center in
Mayotte. Trois-Vallées and Hauts Vallons continue to develop. The number of buildings continues to increase.
The village of Majicavo Lamir is home to a primary school, a college, a nursery school, a secular private
school. Some undeclared Koranic schools which tend to disappear.
Koungou's territorial gendarmerie brigade is located in Majicavo Lamir, to the south of the town, on the
border with Mamoudzou.
This village is made up of two areas:
Majicavo Dagoni which represents the northern part of the village, old and historic quarter of the village of
Majicavo koropa. We mainly find the Friday mosque in mbalalanga as well as houses which are overlooked by the
ETPC quarry;
Majicavo Dubai (or Bandrajou), as its name suggests, this part brings together the commercial part of the
city. With a clientele coming from all over the island, its importance is further reinforced by the strong
demographics, often in unhealthy huts. It is only since the death of a young 5-year-old boy in January 2017
that the authorities have been trying to find solutions.
