Mamoudzou is the most populated commune (municipality) of Mayotte. It is located on Grande-Terre (or Mahoré),

Originally a sultanate, it is now an overseas department of France and a vibrant crossroads of African, Asian,
Indian, European, and Malagasy influences.
Characterized by a volcanic mountain range that runs the length of the island.

The headquarters of the magazine Jana na Leo, "primarily concerned with articles on social life of the island of Mahore", is published in Mamoudzou. Restaurants of note in Mamoudzou include the Les Terrasses, Hotel Restaurant Isijiva, Le Barfly and Mamoudzou La Kaz. A ferry service is provided for tourists to the island of Petite Terre.
The airport for Mayotte is on Petite Terre. To get between the two islands there is a frequent passenger/car ferry. The airport for Mayotte is on Petite Terre. To get between the two islands there is a frequent passenger/car ferry. You can visit the Daily very colorful and bustling market
In Mamoudzou, you can go to the Prefect Beach Located on the western slope of the Pointe d'Handréma in the north, Le Préfet beach is one of the most beautiful on the island. However, pedestrian access is now not recommended for security reasons. The trick is to get there by boat to fully enjoy it. The story goes that one of the prefects of Mayotte was particularly fond of this place and the island's way of life! The water is crystal clear, turtles regularly rub shoulders with the site, snorkellers can enjoy an exceptional drop-off and corals.
You can visit the Office de Tourisme located near the barge in Mamoudzou, Grande-Terre. You will find information on accommodation, car rentals, catering, activities to discover the island and places not to be missed during your stay. It isa very informative place to go, the tourist office will give you quite valuable information about the island of mayotte, to discover the little pearls of this French Muslim African island, they will guide you through brochures, tourist guide free and large card
You can dive at the Hippocampe plongee located in Mamoudzou. It is a well-run diving center focused on dives in the area "passe en S". The dive guides are easy-going, they will assure a smooth dive and try their best to show you the various underwater life. Seems a bit pricey at first, but the dives are way longer than with your average dive center, so well worth. Would recommend
You can do wakeboard at Wake Up Maluja. Appeared at the end of the 80s, the wakeboard is the little brother of the water version snowboard.
Easy and fun, wakeboarding allows you to have fun very quickly.
On the water or in the air you will have a blast.
In Mamoudzou you can explore the many hiking trails, including a trek up the perfect cone of Mont Choungui for a truly impressive view of the island, discovering a charming lemur or two along the way. Browse the colorful stalls of the Mamoudzou market for clothing and crafts, and sample papaya, mangoes, and passion fruit. If you think there’s a hint of Chanel N°5 in the air, you might be right. Mayotte is made even more enchanting thanks to the intoxicating aroma of ylang-ylang plantations on the island. Take in the island landscape at 210 Marches d'Acoua. The long hike takes you up and down the hills above the Acoua Bay and past lush vegetation on shore. Starting from a small village at the foot of the hill, the walk up to the hill provides the best view of the natural forested beauty; once you reach the top, expect panoramic views of the neighboring islands and deep blue water. Be careful on the way down, as the stairs can be slippery and dangerous.
You can go on boat rides into the lagoon to watch dolphins and whales (seasonal). Mamoudzou has no "shopping center" as such but there are a few shops scattered around, along with banks, restaurants, hotels and bars (despite the island being mainly Muslim).
There are guesthouses in Mamoudzou like Le Mastro Chambre d’hotes or hotels near Mamoudzou harbour like villa Maora, located 20 minutes north of Mamoudzou which now benefits from the 4 ylang label.
There are relatively few accommodations and they are mostly lodges and guest rooms.
There are some good restaurants in Mamoudzou like Le Moana which is a very popular fish restaurant serving local specialities. You will have to book or go early. It is not cheap but it is of good quality. You can enjoy the view on the terrasse in front of the sea, and observe " petit terre" and the ferry boat make the journey. On Mamoudzou-Petite-Terre, there are snack shops and pizzerias. Restaurants serving French cuisine or Indian Ocean influences are numerous in Petite-Terre and Mamoudzou, they are less and less as one moves away from the city. In general, the big hotels often also have restaurants.
Mamoudzou will bring you a huge diversity of meal types, but we strongly recommend getting out of the centre of Mamoudzou to discover the best places where you can eat good Mahoran food at affordable prices.
