Mamoudzou is the capital of the French overseas region and department of Mayotte, in the Indian Ocean. Mamoudzou is the most populated commune (municipality) of Mayotte. It is located on Grande-Terre (or Mahoré), the main island of Mayotte. Originally a sultanate, it is now an overseas department of France and a vibrant crossroads of African, Asian, Indian, European, and Malagasy influences.
The commune of M’Tzamboro, which is located at the northern tip of the island, is made up of three villages: M’tsahara, Hamjago and the chief town of M’Tzamboro. The importance of the locality throughout the history of the island makes M’Tzamboro a site rich in vestiges. Those of the royal dwellings of King Moilimou M’Boro, to which the village owes its name, are among the most considerable.
Koungou is a French commune located in the department and overseas region of Mayotte which was home to 32,156 inhabitants in 2017. It is the second most populous municipality in Mayotte. The commune of Koungou, located in the northeast of the island, borders the Mamoudzou capital. Koungou is one of the ancient localities of Mayotte. Its population dates back to the Middle Ages.
The commune of Kani-Kéli includes six villages in the south of Mayotte: M’Bouini, Passi-Kéli, M’Ronabéja, Kani Bé, Choungui and the capital of Kani-Kéli. The village of Choungui has a somewhat special position compared to the rest of the commune, because it is located inland, at the foot of Mount Choungui.

Bandrele (also spelled with two accents: Bandrélé) is a French commune in the department and overseas region of Mayotte, populated by 10,282 inhabitants in 2017. The commune of Bandrélé is located in the south-east of the island. The Bandrélé islet (fifth largest island in Mayotte). The salt ecomuseum: this is the only place where salt is collected (extraction of salt from silt) on the island.
The municipality of Dembeni is located in the center of the island of Mayotte. It covers more than 38 km² and has 16,116 inhabitants. It is made up of 5 villages: Ongojou, Tsararano, Dembéni, Iloni and Hajangua. Dembeni is a university town focused on educating young people. Indeed, it not only has a high school and a college but it also houses the only University Center in Mayotte.
Chiconi is a French commune in the department and overseas region of Mayotte with a population of 8,295 inhabitants. It is located in the center-west of the island. The town is made up of the villages of Chiconi and Sohoa and is home to a growing population that speaks Shibouchi, a dialect inherited from the Malagasy language. In this municipality, the two main cultures of the island of Mayotte are represented.
