Welcome to our site
The municipality of Dembeni is located in the center of the island of Mayotte. It covers more than 38 km² and
has 16,116 inhabitants. It is made up of 5 villages: Ongojou, Tsararano, Dembéni, Iloni and Hajangua. Dembeni
is a university town focused on educating young people. Indeed, it not only has a high school and a college
but it also houses the only University Center in Mayotte. Dembeni is the main archaeological site of Mayotte.
Excavations have shown that the site had been, from the 8th to the 11th centuries, an important commercial
center. It was thought until the 1980s that this prosperity was due to the iron trade. But from new research
in 2013, it appears to be due to the rock crystal trade. The crystal arrived from the mines of Madagascar and
was cut and resold in Dembeni, to Arab and Persian merchants. This rock crystal was then worked in Egypt and
Persia.
The town is at the center of the eastern coast of Grande-Terre. The climate is tropical humid. The town is
made up of five villages: Dembeni, Tsararano, Iloni, Hajangoua, Ongojou
The town's landscape, made up of plains, small cirques and hills, is characterized by its past as an
agricultural center, dating from the colonial era. Location of large sugar cane plantations, there were in
fact from 1841 to 0901 two agricultural concessions which marked its history. Today, the remains of the sugar
factory and its tall chimneys in hajangoua bear witness to this past and are being revalued (as sites of
interest for cultural tourism) by the cultural department of CDM.
Today, the town of Dembéni has retained its agricultural vocation, demonstrating significant potential. Its
natural assets make it a privileged area for agriculture, in particular for market gardening. Citrus fruit
production, of which Hajangoua's two farms are major suppliers, thus represents an important sector of the
commune's economy. The town is also home to the IFM: the teacher training institute and a college.
Tsararano is a town and commune (Malagasy: kaominina) in Madagascar. It belongs to the district of
Maevatanana, which is a part of Betsiboka Region. The population of the commune was estimated to be
approximately 10,000 in 2001 commune census.
Primary and junior level secondary education are available in town. The majority 98% of the population of the
commune are farmers. The most important crops are rice and tobacco, while other important agricultural
products are peas and cotton. Additionally fishing employs 2% of the population
